If you're reading this, you or someone you know is probably suffering from GBS feet. Those very cold, tight and painful feet that come along with the typical GBS symptoms (weakness, numbness and tingling). Frequently, folks talk about how uncomfortable it is for their feet to be this way, how they've injured themselves, losing balance and falling or turning an ankle. Our feet are the foundation for our ability to move about so it's super important to take care of them.
Magnesium (Mg) is one of the most common minerals for people to be low or deficient in. And with over 600 enzymes in our body depending on Mg to perform their function, including generating energy and allowing muscle fibers to relax and lengthen, it's no wonder this mineral could help. Our nerves are highly energy consuming tissues so restoring energy is a big part of restoring nerve function.
Tight feet can be painful as well as increase one's risk for injury, a setback to recovery that no one wants. Mg allows muscles fibers to lengthen at the cellular, microscopic level allowing greater mobility. Improved foot health will mean better balance and ability to return to normal life.
Here's how you can get more Magnesium into your body and feet:
Foods: Dark leafy greens (think Spinach, Chard, Beet Greens), Pumpkin Seeds, Lima Beans
There are many great food that are high in magnesium so when you're cooking a meal and looking to add something that will boost your nutritional value, go ahead and search for high Mg foods. You may also already have a favorite dish that includes high Mg foods you can incorporate more of into daily life.
2. Supplements: Magnesium Glycinate, Magnesium Threonate, Magnesium Malate
These are my favorite forms to take in a pill as they tend to absorb better than other forms. Just be aware that if you take enough your stools be become looser (which might be a good thing!). The zone right before getting loose stools is ideal.
3. Foot baths with Epsom salt or minerals
This is my favorite method as it is very cozy and comfortable. The warm water helps warm up those cold feet, improving circulation and absorbing Mg right into the area we are targeting. There are foot baths that have an electric water pump that keeps the water warm and moving around the feet which is really nice. The downside is you will not absorb as much Mg all over the body as you would eating food and supplements.
Give these methods a try and let me know how it goes.
